What is the Iida Puppet Festa?
In a word, it is the largest puppet festival in Japan, held in Iida City every year in the beginning of August.
Featuring professional troupes from Japan and abroad, as well as various amateur and student groups, and with a full spectrum of styles from traditional to modern gathered in one place, Iida City truly takes on a puppetry patina while the Festa is in full swing. To say nothing of the Japanese troupes, the participation of many unique troupes from abroad adds to the flavor, and there are an incredible 480 stage performances in total.
There are also a multitude of fun events, including the adult-oriented “Midnight Theater”, the “Wai-wai Parade” of puppets and puppeteers who wind their way through downtown Iida, and the “Waku-waku (exciting) Workshops”, which provide a chance to learn the basics of puppetry.
The Festa headquarters will be in the Iida Cultural Hall (Nagano Prefecture, Iida City, Takaha-cho 5-5-1), which will also be the venue for many performances throughout the Festa.
Including the Festa headquarters (Iida Cultural Hall) and the adjacent puppet theater, there will be performances in approximately 120 locations in and around the city, of which about 30 venues will be within easy walking distance from the Festa headquarters. Transportation by bus or taxi is recommended for the other venues.
*For performance times and locations, please be sure to see the General Program, which will be available in July. Information will also be available on the Official Homepage.
The basic premises of the Iida Puppet Festa
The Iida Puppet Festa is a puppetry festival made possible through the actions of both the local citizens and the puppeteers.
The ideal of the festival is “Watch, perform, support: The Triangular Stage I Can Make”.
The audience, the performers, and even those working as staff – everyone buys the Entry Badge for 700Yen, and takes part in the experience by wearing it. This income helps support the Festa.
How do I get a badge?
Entry Badges are available at all venues, and can be purchased on the day of the performance.
*Badges are needed for everyone 3 years and older. Wearing the badge, you can watch as many performances as you like (not including performances that require an admission fee). Please note, badges are also required in order to watch charged performances.
